William Sloane Coffin on UCC Ads

The United Church of Christ (UCC) has concerned itself for a long time with the issue of fair access to the public airwaves.

The part of the church specifically charged to champion the cause of fair and ethical representation of public issues in the media is called the "OC, Inc." (Office of Communication). In concert with the UCC's recent television and radio advertisements, the OC, Inc. has launched a website at: www.accessibleairwaves.org that promotes the group's attempts to create/maintain a representative voice for the public good on television and radio.

They also have guest contributors. William Sloane Coffin has posted an interesting piece about the recent refusal of CBS and NBC to run a UCC ad, titled, "It's clear that homophobia is reason for ad's rejection".

One part in particular struck me as poignant and prophetic:

In a Washington, D.C., cemetery, on the gravestone of a Vietnam veteran, it is written, "When I was in the military, they gave me a medal for killing two men and a discharge for loving one."

Please take a look at the OC Site and consider donating money to help put the next round of television commericals on the air. Remember, the commercials the UCC wants to run proclaim a message of inclusiveness and tolerance so sorely lacking in many other Christian denominations today. You can see the commercials yourself on the UCC and OC, Inc. websites. The fund-raising deadline is February 21. Every bit helps!
