I write this hoping that I can get some guidance from the DailyKos community that will help me to chose the best health insurance available. I am approaching 4 months being unemployed and need to purchase some coverage on my own. I thought if this diary gets any attention, it could also help others here who are in the same situation. More after the jump...
I have elected to continue coverage under COBRA but did not actually pay the premium. In this way, I was able to get coverage if I needed it in case of a catastrophic situation, but without having to pay the very high premiums to continue the health coverage I had at my prior job. Now that period is over and I have no insurance.
I know there is a lot of expertise here with regard to health insurance. I am hoping some people here will help me to find the best coverage at the best price. I have no medical or health issues at this time (Thank God!) and I am mainly concerned with protecting myself from incurring a huge medical bill in case of an accident or emergency surgery. I can go online and find plenty of information and plans offered, but I have no way of knowing what's what and assume that all these companies are spinning me to get me to buy the crappiest coverage at the highest price. Please offer me some guidance if you know of which you speak. Thanks!
In case you were wondering, I managed a department for a real estate investment company that is now in receivership and will be liquidated in the near future. The CEO and COO of that company have been charged with securities fraud and misappropriating $300 million dollars in investor funds. What we low-level employees did not know was that the money raised from investors to purchase properties was allegedly being used to fund operations, the CEO's corporate jet and allegedly both CEO and COO had quite an expensive habit of frequenting hookers. So now, we're all screwed! Thanks for your help!
